Details
Description1080 was a poison widely used against opossums; a drop was planned for March.
Letters of protest had started on February 6. The photo was printed on March 13, with an article on a protest meeting in the civic hall; six Regional Council representatives met '400 angry protesters'; some from the Wairarapa. there had been two meetings in Maymorn on January 31 and February 7.
A map of the proposed area to be covered was published on February 27; it was reported that protests would mean further consultation would be needed, and the drop would be delayed. In the April 3 issue, wider buffer zones were announced.
May 22 announced a 'breakthrough'; instead of a helicopter system and 1080, encapsulated cyanide pellets would be placed in above-ground bait stations, and the area would be reduced to a third of the 7200 hectares in the Whiteman's and Mangaroa valleys; 1080 would be used in Kaitoke.
