DescriptionPrinted in colour in the June 12, 2002 'Leader'. the regional council was to place an application before a city council sub-committee that night. They deferred action until a Medical Officer of Health's report had been received. It was not received in time for the council's June 26 meeting.
The February 6, 2002 'Leader' had printed a letter objecting to the proposed application of 1080 and advertised a second 'concerned residents' meeting at Maymorn Hall.
On February 27, the 'Leader' printed a small-scale map of the proposed 20 000-hectare Mangaroa-Kaitoke bovine TB control operation; 13 000 hectares involved aerial drops of 1080.
Correspondence and meetings rumbled on for months.
The June proposal reduced the 1080 area to 8 000 hectares; the timing was later than the council had wanted for best results, and the cost had roughly doubled. Specifically, areas around water catchments had been avoided.
After continuing protests and delays over late reports, the council finally approved the drop on July 24.
Weather conditions caused delays; the non-toxic bait was scattered fairly early, but the poison drop was delayed until mid-November.
