He had joined the college in 1973 as head of social studies, and went to Ngaruawahia as assistant principal in 1980. He returned to Heretaunga as principal in 1988; intending to stay 7 or 8 years, but 'sideways moves for principals dried up'.
He joined student exchange programme AFS NZ in 2003, as its national director. In the mid-90s, New Zealand was hosting around 500 students a year; numbers had fallen to around 200.
He would continue to work with a reunion committee, and oversee a new visioning process until a new principal was appointed, probably in the second term.
His deputy, Bruce Hart, was appointed in late February.
