DescriptionJohn Burrett, Matthew Payne and Simon Philpott had been sentenced for their parts in a kidnapping plot. A bunker in which the victim would have been held had been discovered, sparking a major operation with up to 140 staff involved, trying to discover who was involved, and obtaining evidence, before an arrest was made art the Botanical Gardens. To cover the real reasons for all the activity, terrorism references had been leaked.
(March 2, 2005; John Burrett, sentenced to a maximum of seven years' jail, had dropped his right of appeal against an order deporting him to England.)
At the same time, D-S Porter had been under pressure to complete high-profile proceedings to extradite former St Patrick's College priest Alan Woodcock from Britain; he had been charged with indecent assaults in Upper Hutt, Wellington and Palmerston North schools from 1982 to 1985, and arrested in Britain in August 2002. A series of applications for extension of time for appeals against deportation finally ended with a hearing scheduled for November 5, 2003. Woodcock was in court on January 20, 2004, after being extradited the weekend before, and was remanded on bail. He pleaded guilty to four representative charges (out of 21) on May 17, and was sentenced to seven years' gaol on June 25.
