Details
DescriptionThis scheme had first been mentioned by the 'Leader' in an article on September 15, 2004; Upper Hutt Developments would start proceedings for a private plan change to the city's district plan.
An October 27 article said 100 residential lots of 1000 square metres minimum and 1.16 hectares maximum were proposed, over a 73-hectare area, centred around Flux Road, and extending from Parkes Line Road to Mangaroa Valley Road; submissions would close on November 27.
By the next issue, November 3, an open-air meeting had been held in protest, 180 valley dwellers had vowed to fight, and a 6-person 'Get SMART' (Save Mangaroa - a Rural Treasure' committee had been organised, chaired by Angela Calkin-Goeres.
This plan was printed in a four-page advertising feature on November 24, 2004; the same issue described a meeting between promoter Malcolm Gillies and Mangaroa residents.
850 submissions had been received by December 1, and the 'Leader' said it had received a flood of letters - but printed four.
