They had met in Petone in 1944, and married in Wanganui on June 1, 1946. She came from a Salvation Army family in Wellington; he joined in 1952.
Jim, born in Petone had a varied career; assembling bicycles at 14; apprentice letterpress printer, and film projectionist in various locations. He had a carrying business when they married, but they moved to Wanganui 6 months later , and bought a dairy; they later had the Super Cold ice cream factory. Julie was born in 1947.
They moved to Auckland in 1952, and Jim worked three jobs to keep his family (Julie, Gill, Peter, Pam).
He became a Dominion Life insurance agent in 1956, moved to New Plymouth in 1960, and to Wellington as North Island sales manager in 1960; that year, they settled in Upper Hutt. Within 12 months he was national sales manager. There had been 4 branches and 17 salesmen when he started; when he left around ten years later, he had 22 branches and 178 salesmen, and their fleet of cars. He then went into real estate, and later, staff training. They retired in the early 80s and moved to Papakowhai; he article did not say when they returned to Upper Hutt.
Recollect has 60 Hosie photographs on line; 41 of Julie's wedding to Alan Sunkel, and 15 of the engagement celebrations. The one marked by Revelle Jackson as 'Hosie children' is almost of Julie Sunkel and her children. The golden-wedding article moted that Julie had been killed in a motor accident in 1994.
