DescriptionThe organisation had been founded in America in 1956, with Medic Alert New Zealand started by the Upper Hutt Lions Club in 1962. The national head office was set up in Upper Hutt in 1976 ('Leader', September 28). By 1996 it had 77 000 members with individually-numbered bracelets or pendants showing their medical conditions.
Murray had been general manager of the Medical Assurance Society for 13 or 14 years. He was appointed director of the foundation in November 1992, succeeding Kevin Kernick, who had been there 10 years ('Leader', November 9).
Murray retired to a life of bowls and golf in Kapiti in July 1996; when he joined Medic Alert he had found the foundation 'in need of some help financially'; he left it in a far better financial position.
His successor, Ian Johnston, was pictured in the October 9, 1996 'Leader'.
