These three were part of a small group which had organised a similar event two years earlier, raising $2500.
Montana Wines had donated most of the 100-plus bottles plus several magnums, like the one pictured; celebrities included Rod Stewart and Rachel Hunter, Sir Peter Blake, Sandra Edge, Gavin Larsen, Bryce Courtenay, Suzanne Lynch (ex The Chicks), Pam Corkery, Danyon Loader, Governor-General Sir Michael Hardie Boys, Philip Rush, Jonah Lomu, Zinzan Brooke, Georgina Beyer, Selwyn Toogood, Peter Jackson, Richard Thomas (John Boy from The Waltons TV programme), Dipak Patel, Sir Edmund and Lady Hillary and most of the country's political leaders.
The auction would be held at Trentham after the races and Garden and Lifestyle Show, on October 26; auction entry was free.
About 200 attended the sale, which raised around $700; some bottles had been withdrawn, and would be sold later.
