DescriptionPrinted in colour on the front page of the May 24, 2006 'Leader'; the issue preceding 40th-anniversary celebrations of Upper Hutt achieving city status.
Jane was the first baby born at Elderslea after Upper Hutt was declared a city (over 3300 had been born in the borough).
She had ben presented with a silver cup and a bank book with a £10 deposit; by the time she reached 21, it would be worth £18-12 (eighteen pounds, twelve shillings, or $37.20).
Pictures of the cup had been printed in the weeks leading up to the declaration, and one of her and her parents, Russell and Elizabeth, with the mayor, was printed in the 'Leader' on June 8, 1996.
For the 2006 issue, a 1966 picture of her and her parents, Russell and Elizabeth, with the mayor's wife, Maureen Thomas, was printed inside; it is available in 'Recollect'.
The accompanying article by Yvonne Airey listed the following details:-
Primary school, St Joseph's;
Secondary school, St Mary's, Wellington;
First work, Bank of New Zealand, Wellington
Overseas travel with Kirstin, of Kirstin's Flower Shoppe;
Left banking after 7 years;
Degree in nursing;
Paediatric nurse, Wellington Hospital, cancer patient specialist.
At the time the photo was taken, she was on maternity leave; and was resigned to anniversaries being celebrated, and public recognition (and at the time this was written a 50th anniversary was imminent).
Her partner, Tony Webb, was a teacher at Fergusson Intermediate.
Her mother was a Plunket nurse; Jane was her third child.
Seven pictures were taken; the collection has the prints and negatives.
