On leaving Russia in 1979, Yuri had lost his passport and his Russian orchestra post.
After six months he found a post as concert master for the Chicago Civic Orchestra.
In 1980 he was offered the post of concert master for the Caracas Philharmonic orchestra, in Venezuela, where he met Desiree, daughter of pianist Harriet Serr.
By 1985, economic conditions in Venezuela had deteriorated; Yuri knew of possible posts in New Zealand, and was auditioned and accepted.
The family became New Zealand citizens in 1989.
