DescriptionPrinted in the ‘Leader’ on May 1, 1990 with a picture of the Mall Merchants' Association chairman, Chris Tchernegovski. and Retailers' Association committee member June Thompson.
The associations felt that changes were needed urgently, as shops were closing. A consultant's recommendations to the council was coming, but some way off.
1; Roundabout at Pine Avenue.
2; Roundabout or islands at King Street.
3; Ring road system, clockwise; Princes, Main and Station Streets, and Station Crescent.
4; Russell Street one way, from Fergusson Drive.
5; Two-way traffic through the precinct.
6; The 'Brandenburg Gate' feature to be retained as a feature.
7; A stage for entertainment to be relocated opposite the Post Office.
8; Entry from Main Street to Lion Court car park.
Comment; the proposal assumed that through traffic would use Queen Street rather than Fergusson Drive.
