Bill had announced his candidacy almost two years earlier, and was the first person to lodge his name when nominations had recently opened. A former Railways foreman, he had just been made redundant, and was against deregulation of transport.
This picture was new, and sharper than his usual picture, which had appeared regularly for many months.
He had stood for the Social Credit Party in 1984; fourth of four, with 2%; in 1987, for the Democrats; third of three; 4.6%.
