All Upper Hutt schools were invited to compete. 250 youngsters from Heretaunga College, Fergusson Intermediate, Pinehaven, St Joseph's, St Brendan's, Plateau and Upper Hutt took part individually, or as teams; they were given Sellotape and a set number of straws, and challenged to build the tallest and strongest structure they could. Pinehaven came second, at 1.53 metres; they were beaten by Plateau School, who reached 1.83 metres and used diagonal bracing.
