Details
DescriptionIt was built by Mr L.H. Luckens of Lower Hutt and was opened by the Postmaster-General Sir Joseph Ward on 15 April 1918.
A March 21, 2018 'Leader' centenary article said that the first postmistress, Mis L C Moir, lived in quarters at the rear.
The Post Office was closed on 5 February 1988. (Historic detail supplied by Brian Pearce.)
In May 1989 Jan Elizabeth and Hendrik Schouten and Desiree Lorraine Cooney applied for permission to open it as a cafe. A sketch of 'Stamps' Cafe' appeared in the May 16 'Leader'. A greyscale image was printed in the 'Leader' on May 9, 1989 and again on July 4.
However, when approval was given, the Schoutens found the hours too restrictive, and takeaways were not allowed, so the cafe project was dropped.
The building was converted to a house by Maureen and Colin Gibbs; This interior picture was printed in colour in the February 12, 1991 'Leader', with an article on the conversion and a greyscale picture of the Gibbses in front of the house; that colour original has not been scanned.
A greyscale image was printed in the 'Leader' on May 9, 1989 and again on July 4.
The September 4, 2002 'Leader' printed a two-page spread on the history of local post offices.
