DescriptionBill had learned bookbinding many years before; it had taken four years. After becoming unemployed a year earlier, he had returned to the trade, specialising in repair work for schools, where class sets could be given new hard covers at a fraction of the price of new books, and libraries. He had a 'travelling road show', seen here, which displayed some of his work.
There had been sufficient business for him to take on his son, a former fitter and turner, to learn the skills and help with the work.
Bill and Mayor Rex Kirton are holding restored Bibles.
In December 1991 Bill was one of three recipients of Upper Hutt Enterprise awards, with interior and landscape designer Johanna King, and Hydraflow Industrial Ltd, exporters of food dehydrators.
