When she was born, it was thought that she might not live three months. She had had several hip operations, and one leg was shorter than the other, but could now walk without crutches; but Nugget made travel much easier.
She had begun riding with Riding for the Disabled at six-and-a -half; at 11 she got Nugget and joined the pony club.
In October 1990 she was 'best rider' at the CCS Special Olympics, and in 1991 was named the Pony Club's 'most improved rider'.
