The garden, on city council land, had been set up six months before. The article said that all the food grown would go to the Upper Hutt Foodbank.
A picture of Shirley Russell and treasurer Lynne Wyman, almost hidden by corn, was printed in greyscale in the ‘Leader’ on February 25, 1992.
A letter from Abbat Trust trustee Tom Johnson on March 10 pointed out that the trust which leased the ground from the council, and ran the garden, and it was not obliged to supply the foodbank. Councillor Billington said that the council had accepted an application from the Periodic Detention Centre for operation of a food-growing project in Whitemans Valley, controlled by the Trust. Shirley Russell said she had helped the trust find suitable land and had expected that the food would go to the foodbank, as one trustee had assured her.
