Two years previously, Boyd Klap, chairman of the new Zealand Netherlands Foundation, had approached several journalists about writing a book for the 350th anniversary of Tasman's sighting of New Zealand. After initially declining, Hank offered submitted a profile, and was chosen.
At first he worked part-time; then took four months off to tour New Zealand and visit Holland, to see the country he had left as a toddler, and to interview migrants who had returned from New Zealand.
The book's launch by the Prime Minister, Jim Bolger, came the day before Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands arrived in New Zealand. timed to coincide with
Hank was now living in Lower Hutt, and deputy chief reporter for the 'Evening Post.
Another Hank Schouten and his wife Jan ran the Main Street Café, which the Moran family had taken over in October 1988; there was an article and picture in the May 5, 1992 'Leader'.
