Louise had attended the CCS Gillies Early Intervention Centre in Lower Hutt as a child, before going on to Totara Park School and Maidstone Intermediate where she was their first disabled child to attend. She left Heretaunga College in 1991, and after a spell in a Wellington office, helped out at the Barnardos Day Care had been working at the CCS Gillies Centre, which worked with pre-school children, giving physiotherapy and help with speech and language, and preparing them for mainstreaming. She planned to go to Wellington Teachers' College to get qualifications in teaching children with disabilities.
