Born in Wellington, he gave himself the 'Gog' name, as a child. He had studied accountancy before being called up for World War II; he became a major in the artillery during his five years overseas.
He met his wife Yolande, from Lower Hutt, in the Middle east; they married in Rome in 1944.
After returning, they ran a country store in Raumati, then moved to Upper Hutt in the mid-1950s where he and his brother-in-law began Mark & McKenzie; they also had a music shop, Somerset House.
Both businesses were eventually sold, and Gog completed the Real Estate Institute's and Valuers' Institute exams and went into real estate with Tony Wood (Mark & Wood).
