DescriptionPrinted in greyscale in the 'Leader' on August 2, 1993.
The two chairs, sited outside 144 Main Street, were donated to the city by the descendants of Jack Alexander Clark and his wife Gladys Eileen Clark in July 1993, 'in recognition of their contribution to the youth of Upper Hutt'. A picture in the August 2, 1993 'Leader' shows their daughter, Margaret Hayfield, sitting on one with the mayor, Rex Kirton, and a memorial plaque in the footpath.
In his later years, Mr Clark could walk from Wilford Street only about as far as this point.
Gladys died in 1947; she had been involved in the Red Cross and the RSA, and ran the first Upper Hutt basketball (netball) team.
Jack died in 1992, aged 86. He had begun men's hockey in Upper Hutt and had also been involved in the Red Cross.
They had six children; Margaret Hayfield and Bill Clark lived in Upper Hutt and were at the presentation.
The back-to-back seats and the street light between them had vanished by 2012.
