DescriptionThe July 5, 1993 'Leader' had printed an 'Interested in painting murals?' advertisement; 'Paint supplied - Prizes for the best murals'; individuals or groups interested to contact Robyn Steel at Upper Hutt City Council.
This picture was printed in colour in the September 13, 1993 'Leader'; Simon had spent the last four weeks 'come hail, rain or shine', painting land and cityscapes and abstract designs, but had covered only four of the eighteen sections available. A Fergusson intermediate group had completed a panel and Rawainia Wilson was working on one.
Robyn Steel was inviting more people to have a go.
An earlier mural on marine life, designed by Peter Newman, had been painted by 1980-1981 student holiday workers and volunteers; Elizabeth Park, Michael Corbett, Peter Newman, Stephen Armstrong and Mike Russell were pictured in action in the February 3, 1981 'Leader'. Another picture showed Peter with students Vivienne Colegrove, Robyn Denne and John Stevens.
Work on building the subway had started in 1978; an article and picture in the September 19 'Leader' said completion was expected early in the new year.
