He had competed in the open class so as to be eligible for the New Zealand team in the world championships in Sydney in March 1994.
April 18, 1994 'Leader'; he had competed in the men' open section in the Easter nationals and won gold, silver and bronze medals, becoming overall first place. He also held New Zealand records for tricks and jump; a recent 26.5-metre jump was 50 cm short of the world record.
His 18-year-old brother Kerry had come third overall in the men's one division, with a gold medal in jump and silver in the slalom.
In the May 15, 1995 'Leader' he was pictured in action and described as the number-one-ranked junior water-skier in the world; New Zealand open and junior number one; he had just won all three events in the junior division of the Asian-Australasian champs, plus first overall against the top eight skiers in Australasia.
