His successor was David Leavy, who had been his deputy. David was the first layman rector; his wife was also on the staff, and their two sons were St Patrick's students.
Among changes he introduced were removal of barriers between day boys and boarders, and between seniors and juniors; they now wore common uniforms and shared meal times. Peer support, buddy systems and vertical assistance programmes had been introduced. The fifth, sixth and seventh form dormitories had been merged.
Women staff had been introduced; Mary Munro as assistant deputy rector, 1988-1990, and a woman had been put in charge of the fourth-form boarding house.
Māori had been introduced as a compulsory language in the third form; Japanese was now on offer, and introductory courses for foreign students; there were 20 in 1993, 12 of them Asian.
Seventy-five per cent of the school was new.
Father Dooley would be an assistant priest at St Mary's in Blenheim and would then be involved in retreat work, probably at Futuna Retreat House in Wellington.
Father Dooley had taught at St Bede's College, Christchurch, had been rector of St Augustin's College in Whanganui for six years and senior master at St Patrick's College in Kilbirnie for a year, and vice-provincial of the Order of Mary in Wellingon, before he came to St Patrick's, Silverstream, in mid-1987 after a year at Loyola University, Chicago.
He returned there for five months in early 1992, and completed a master's degree in Pastoral Studies.
