Born in Petone in 1930; dux of Randwick School, then college in Petone.
Third generation of his family to work in Woburn railway workshops; later worked in the Dunlop tyre factory, and as a brake specialist at Contour Brakes in Lower Hutt.
New Zealand flugelhorn champion 1952, 1954, 1955 and 1962; that year, he also travelled to Holland with the New Zealand National Brass Band.
At some stage, not dated in the band's website, he was their conductor.
He played trumpet in Ron Brazier's dance band.
He was a member of the Maidstone Model Engineering Society, and at the time of his death had been building a model steam locomotive; he had obtained permission to name it after Sir Edmund Hillary. The family hoped that it would be completed by one of its members.
