The Whakatiki Bowling and Recreation Club (Inc) was about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The initiators had sought permission to set up in Trentham Memorial Park, and were offered two alternatives; they chose the Golders Reserve, in McLeod Street. 65 people attended a Civic Centre meeting on January 27, 1975 and resolved to form a club, and named it. By January 31, 50 people had joined the club, which was Upper Hutt's second club, and the first to give men and women equal playing rights. The first green was opened on October 2, 1976, and the clubhouse was built in 1978 and extended a few years later. The second green was added in 1979.
