Tony had represented New Zealand in the world championships in Austria in 1989. and had been in the top four in standard class for ten years. Standard-class sailplanes were limited to 15 metres wingspan and 525 kg, and were not allowed flaps to increase lift.
Ben had been flying for two years, using a glider formerly owned by Tony's father. He now had his own glider. Club-class gliders were built of wood, and a handicapping system was used in competition.
