Caltex sponsored the annual award. Betty was nominated by two people, one a newcomer to Upper Hutt.
Mary grew and potted plants, 'despite not having the best of mobility'; purchasers were asked to nominate the charity to which their 'donation' should be sent, and their instructions had been faithfully obeyed; the article listed Wellington Free Ambulance, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Silverstream Home of Compassion, Te Omanga Hospice, Upper Hutt Animal Rescue, CanTeen Plus, the IHC, Cancer Society and the Salvation Army.
For a change, the $500 award was given as credit with Gorrie's, instead of petrol vouchers.
In 1995, Caltex would introduce a national Unsung Hero.
