The Cosmopolitan Club was recognised for its Meals on Wheels (four drivers were also recognised), and for its sponsorship of the Cosmopolitan Brass band, and its support of Te Omanga Hospice, Barnardo's, IHC, SPCA and other charities.
Doug had been deputy mayor from 1980 to 1992, he had also been chairman of the Hutt Valley Drainage Board, president of the New Zealand Traffic Institute the Upper Hutt Rotary Club and the Upper Hutt Valley Community Arts Council, and chairman of the board of Upper Hutt College; he was killed in a road accident late in 1994.
