A boy at Koranui Marae's holiday programme had suggested an ice cream sundae as a project; then another suggested they go for the longest.
Stokes Valley Mitre 10 supplied 100 metres of marley plastic guttering, Scott Court Dairy 160 litres of ice cream, Watties 24 kg of fruit salad, and Stokes Valley New World supplied 200 containers of topping. It was all assembled in Scott Court shopping centre. The final result was measured at 80.16 metres, which the 'Leader' claimed as a world record; there had been no previous attempt recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Then 200 children and their spoons were unleashed.
