She started on Saturday, February 23, at 6:30 with a support group which included several grandchildren on their bikes. Hers only had three speeds; some escorts had twelve.
She had been allowed to use the wide shoulder on the River Road. For her, the worst part was Western Hutt Road, where it narrowed north of Melling Bridge.
She arrived at 8:15.
She attended Wesley Centre in the Upper Hutt Uniting Parish and the women's fellowship was renovating the kitchens, so the trip was organised as a sponsored ride, and raised $850.
She had come to Upper Hutt with her late husband, the Reverend Stan Olds, a Methodist minister, and was offered the job of tea lady at Heretaunga College; she was farewelled in July 1992, after 21 years there.
