Details
DescriptionPrinted in greyscale in the ‘Leader’ on July 16, 1997 in an ‘Industrious Upper Hutt’ supplement. A second picture showed the mill interior.
The mill began as a Parapine subsidiary, built on the site of a Vibrapac concrete-products plant east of the Parapine site, visible at far left.
The mill was sold in 1995 to WPI, which had been Winstone Pulp International. At the stage pictured, it employed 56 people, including engineers, an electrician, saw doctors and timber tradesmen, and sales staff.
The mill's buildings have now almost-completely gone.
Logs came from as far away as Wanganui and the Wairarapa.
The sawmill is at left; and sawn timber was sorted in the adjacent rotary structure.
The largest building at right probably housed milling equipment which dressed the timber to final size, and sometimes radiused the edges There were drying kilns at the eastern end of the site, out of sight in this image, and another in Montgomery Crescent.
The Terralink International and Google maps as late as September 2016 showed many buildings which had long since gone.
