Sam was in Upper Hutt as one of two guest performers in a Wellington Sinfonia (now Orchestra Wellington) concert in the civic centre. It was conducted by John Hopkins, former NZSO conductor, now living in Australia, and attracted an audience of 350 in spite of an All Black test being broadcast. Sam and fellow guest cellist Ashley Brown played the Brahms concerto for violin and cello.
There had been a Friday lunch with the mayor, before the Saturday concert.
Sam was born in Elderslea of Samoan parents Sam and Simiama, went to Trentham School, Fergusson Intermediate and Upper Hutt College. The article said he had started violin lessons with Virginia Philp, but does not mention a New Zealand degree; he had completed an M A in San Francisco. He had won an AGC Young Achiever's Award in 1991. (Ashley Brown had won one in 1995.)
Sam was in his second year of a four-year contract as artist-in-residence at Waikato University. He was also a founding member of the Turnovsky Trio.
John Hopkins was celebrating his 70th birthday.
As a fifth former, Sam Konise was accepted into the National Youth Orchestra with sixth-form percussionist Lance Philip in 1985 ('Leader', June 25). In 1985 Sam won sports blues in athletics and basketball, and a service gold medal, at Upper Hutt College.
