The society had 'conferences' in the two Upper Hutt Catholic churches, and most other churches. Mr Pritchard had been chairman of the district council, which covered Eastbourne to Masterton, for seven years, and his term was ending. The society had not been able to help many people when he started, bun now had several donated-goods shops, a dedicated pool of members, several youth conferences (St Patrick's College conference presented $2000 at the ensuing dinner) and healthy finances.
The blessing was presented during an August 24 mass which celebrated the society's founder, Frederick Oznam, being acclaimed blessed; a stage in the road to sainthood.
