DescriptionTed Menzies, QSM (June 1983), died in 1991, aged 84.
He had come to Upper Hutt in 1939, and ran his E R Menzies Ltd Service Station in what is now Gorries in Fergusson Drive until he retired in 1965.
The September 17 obituary said he had helped found the local branch of St John, which had just celebrated its 50th anniversary; he was a life member and Officer of the order.
He had also been active in Rotary, and was awarded their highest honour, a Paul Harris Fellowship, in 1983; he was pictured with it in the April 5 'Leader'.
He was also a life member of the Hapai Club, a foundation member of the Whakatiki Bowling Club, a J P and marriage celebrant, and a former volunteer fireman.
Mrs Marsh's head was printed in greyscale in the ‘Leader’ on December 17, 1997, with an obituary; the article said she had died unexpectedly at Hutt Hospital on December 6, aged 76. The Hines family had come to Upper Hutt in 1927; she worked with the Alliance Finance Corporation before being seconded to the WAACs. She married Eric Marsh in St David's in 1945. She was a founding member of St John in Upper Hutt, and was a Commander of the Order. She had received a civic award with her husband in 1989, and a QSM in the early 1990s. She was also a founder member of the Hapai Club, where she had been convenor of meals on wheels.

The August 4, 1981 'Leader' printed an article on Mr and Mrs Marsh who had been honoured at a Rotary luncheon; the following comes from that article.
Mrs Marsh had been founder of Upper Hutt St John's cadet divisions in 1939, superintendent of cadet nursing 1942-1961, made a Serving Sister in 1959, superintendent of Upper Hutt nursing division 1961-65, Hutt Valley supervisor of nursing cadet divisions 1966-69, and then superintendent of nursing, Hutt Valley. She became the Hutt Valley's first Officer of the order in 1975 ('Leader', September 3). She had held various St John posts as president or chairman.
She had also been Meals on Wheels organizer for 21 years, on the Hapai Club executive for 25, was a life member of the Wellington Sea Rescue Service and formerly a crew member and radio operator, committee member and life member of the Royal Forest and Bird Society, and had been associated with Girl Guides since she joined at 11.
In many the Marshes' lives ran in parallel; very similar in the Sea Rescue Service, Scouts and Guides respectively, and long service with St John.
