After serving in New Zealand and the Pacific in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force for four years from 1941, he was ordained a Presbyterian minister, and was minister at Upper Hutt's St Andrews from 1969 to 1972, before resigning after a bout of tuberculosis; (according to the article, in 1970). He then worked with Hutt County Council, at one stage standing in as county clerk while Mr Pohlen was overseas. Later he worked in the Heretaunga-Pinehaven District Community Council offices, in charge of administrative, secretarial and treasury functions, before retiring in 1990.

The picture was first printed in the November 10, 1981 'Leader'; he was leaving Silverstream to help his daughter and son-in-law at their horticulture and restaurant business in Greytown, after ten years with Hutt County, initially as a committee clerk.
The building behind him was on Fergusson Drive, and had been Silverstream's fire station; it was put into service as an office after Hutt County was reduced in size in 1974; the expected merger of Heretaunga-Pinehaven with Upper Hutt took much longer than the two years anticipated.
