Mr Stringer had lived in the valley for 58 years and served with the Silverstream Volunteer Fire Brigade sine 1940.
The other three honoured for voluntary community services were Mary Richardson, Harry St Johnstone and Graham Stokes; the photos used are not in the library collection.
He retired on July 31, 1986; he was pictured in dress uniform in the August 26 'Leader', which gave more details.
The juniors were all around 16, and wore jerseys and caps and carried firefighting on bicycles until they had enough experience to ride on the 1933 Ford Model A fire engine.

The 'Leader' printed a photo of the boys on September 4, 1984.
Len served an apprentice as a plumber and drainlayer, starting his own business in Silverstream on Main Road, near the old fire station.
He was promoted district officer in charge of the Silverstream brigade1n 1984, succeeding his older brother, Fred, a hairdresser, who retired after 44 years' service; the 'Leader' wrote up his retirement on July 10, 1984. Fred's Queen's Fire Service Medal for distinguished Service was presented by the Queen on February 28, 1977.
he was awarded the United Fire Brigades' Association Gold Star for 25 years' service in 1966, and in addition to the civic award was awarded the Silverstream brigade's Life Honorary Member Medal at the May 1986 annual meeting; the fourth award in the brigade's 56-year history. In the past 46 years the brigade ad received 4700 callouts, with Len present at around 4000.
In a May 13, 1980 'Leader' picture, he was president of the Wellington Provincial Gold Star Association, Upper Hutt's B Hanson was president of the Hutt Valley Fire Brigades sub-association, and Upper Hutt's R A Taylor was president of the Wellington Provincial Fire Brigades Association.
The November 11, 1980 'Leader' printed some of Fred Stringer's memories of the brigade, ahead of its 50th anniversary. It was established in 1930, and in 1931 acquired the upper valley's first motorized fire engine. The first station, now at Silver Stream Railway, was basically a garage, placed at the top of a Chatsworth Road hill, possibly to ensure quick starts.
