Re-printed in greyscale in three 'electoral forum' issues of the 'Leader' on June 26, July 3, and July 10, 1984. A June 19, 1984 and later 'Leader' advertisements used a National Publicity Studios portrait in which he was wearing a jacket. In 1978 he came first of five candidates, with 56.7% of the votes. In 1981 his share of the vote to 55.6% in a four-horse race, and in 1987 he rose to first of three, with 59.7%. He retired in 1990, handing the reins to Paul Swain.
