In 1948, aged 20, he became borough treasurer. Later in 1948 he was offered a partnership with an Upper Hutt accountancy firm. Elected to Borough Council 1952, and was later deputy mayor.
He was not elected president of the National Party in 1971, but in July 1973 succeeded, and chaired it for nine years from July 1973, and was made a knight bachelor in 1982; in the Queen's Birthday Honours; the "Leader's" first mention was on June 15.
Sir George served as president of the Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce and held various directorships, as well as owning a local business.
His book, 'The Years of Lightning', was published in October 1980; Whitcoulls offered autographed copies at $10.95 - regular price $13.95 on October 14.Date TakenMay 1981
