Father and son Bill and Nick Hansen owned the Real Pie Shop on one part of the site. The Ascot Lodge would have to be demolished
Its future was in doubt; a specified departure from town planning was needed. Eight landowners and shopkeepers had objected, while the CIT and its students' association and St Brendan's School were supporters, and there wre letters of support from many local residents and eight business firms, and seven firms were interested in leasing space in the building. The planning tribunal's decision was expected the following Tuesday; somehow, the 'Leader' managed to report the council's dismissal and Nick Hansen's outrage on that day.
The picture was reprinted, half-size, on August 11, with 2-1/2 columns summarizing the arguments. The shop and lodge had been zoned Commercial A1, but the district scheme recommended the whole area be zoned Residential C. The initial proposal had been for 876 square meters; the planner had suggested 735, with three shops including a supermarket and pie/bakery shop; the Hansens had come back with 1049 square metres and four shops in addition to the supermarket and pie/bakery shop. The Hansens had yet to decide on appealing, or leaving their shop, which was hard to clean and not big enough to cope with demand.
The picture was reprinted on October 13, in black and white; the council was considering changing the zoning to commercial; the change was subject to public objection and would have to be approved by the Town and Country Planning Tribunal.
The May 25, 1982 'Leader' reported that Mr Hansen now proposed to build and move into a new bakery in Camp Street on an empty lot next to his Real Pies shop; it would not supply other retailers; the owner of adjacent flats was the only objector.
The September 9, 1980 'Leader' had reported on an earlier proposal which was an enlarged bakery employing 15.
