The 526-square-metre $320 000 60-person training centre would be funded by the Cawthron Institute Trust and leased back to the Society for the Intellectually Handicapped. It would contain home training and special training rooms, a laundry, cafeteria, kitchen and bulk store, and a 232 square metre workshop at the rear. The previous 324 Main Road centre would provide four additional beds, and there was another adult home at 340 Main North Road. The junior home next to the Kristina Jepson senior home in Marlborough Street, Silverstream, was being renovated and refurbished for 10 seniors, and a new 10-bed junior home was being built in Stokes Valley. A fund-raising drive would be launched by the mayor.
The centre opened for business on April 20, 1982.
By 2014, the building was occupied by a Childhood Concepts Early Learning Centre.
