DescriptionThe church part was printed in the August 11, 1981 'Leader'; the hall on August 25; both to the same scale. They have been copied from the bound volume and joined.
The church would be celebrating its 50th anniversary on September 5 and 6.
From 1920, fortnightly services had been held in the Silverstream Social Hall, opposite St Patrick's College; the area was part of the St David's parish from 1920 to 1952.
In June 1930 it was decided to build a church; the foundation stone was laid in September, and the church opened in November. It had been built by Fletcher Construction in six months. It was not named until 1937. Heretaunga Parish was formed in 1952, ending at Moonshine Road; it included Stokes Valley until 1957, and Trentham until 1966, when presumably St Andrew's took over.
The hall (roof visible above the flat roof of the lounge) was added in 1959, with the women raising the funds; it is drawn too far to the right.
The lounge, at right, was opened on December 9, 1979.
The church has changed considerably, since; the hall and church entries are together, and the sanctuary has been moved from the far (northern) end to the extended southern end.
The church was known to be an earthquake risk in 1981, and a new building had been discussed; after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake the church was closed for a time..
