DescriptionPrinted as a full-page map in the July 8, 1980 'Leader'. There was also a picture of a junction with a closed side street.
The bypass had been deferred; architect Bill Pearson came up with a plan which had no official backing.
Access would be limited to light-controlled junctions at Field Street, Kiwi Street, Bathurst Street, Sutherland Avenue, Tawa Street, John Street, Ward Street and Richmond Street; drivers living in all other side streets would have to head away from Fergusson Drive to a street running parallel with it, and go to one connecting to a junction.
The original was copied at 70% scale in two pieces and joined, then scanned.
The November 25 'Leader' reported on the borough engineer's and traffic, works and bylaws committee's reactions. There worries about pedestrians' and cyclists' safety; because of problems with kerbing and channelling, each lane would be only 11 feet (3.35 metres) wide; Fergusson F Drive's paving was weak at the edges, and undulated up or down to suit different driveways. Traffic lights could make traffic slower. Businesses would be affected. The report would be received, for consideration by the full council.
A December 2 letter from Bill Pearson criticized the negative attitude of the city engineer's reports and the 'do-nothing' council.
