DescriptionThis architect's drawing was printed in the March 18, 1970 'Leader'.
The company made components for such things as caravan and boat trailer chassis, and had been in Fergusson Drive. The new building was 28 000 square feet/2600 square metres. The smaller building in the background was probably already there. Architects were C J Tse and Associates; builders, Fincon Construction Ltd, Masterton.
Trojan became part of Masport (originally Mason and Porter) before they closed.
The June 23,1981 'Leader' reported that Trojan would close at the end of the year; only 6 of the 39 workers would be transferred to Auckland.
The Upper Hutt branch had specialized in caravan and trailer undercarriages and accessories, but transport costs to and from Auckland and a new 20% sales tax on caravans, trailers and boats had been a major setback.
A September 16, 1980 advertisement to caravan and trailer owners listed 45 authorized service agents; roughly one third were in the South Island.
The May 11, 1982 'Leader' announced that Schweppes New Zealand would be moving 'their operation' from Gracefield to Upper Hutt; the article said manufacture of fizzes, cordials and soft drinks would be involved; but the May 18 article said it would be their Wellington region headquarters and warehouse.
There have been several occupiers since Trojan left in 1981; the 2012 Streetview showed United Group [UGL (NZ) Ltd]; address, 2 Railway Avenue.
Roof ventilators must have been added.
