Les Taylor had started a fashion-shoe shop at the western end of Main Street at Pine Avenue corner in 1947; a picture of it was printed. It had been next to a fish shop, with its smells, fish hanging at the back, blue smoke and marauding cats.
The new building would house the shoe shop at the corne, and other occupants would be a coffee bar, 3-chair men's hairdresser, a combied delicatessen and butchery, and L A Taylor & Co, Mr Taylor's real estate agency.
The building shown is single-storey. There was a rumour that Taylor House was built as a single storey, with the intention of adding the second storey later; but when that stage was begun, it was found that the ground floor lacked the necessary reinforcing; steel had been in short supply; after the borough inspector had inspected it, it had been withdrawn before concrete had been poured.
