The city council was calling tenders for three units. The programme had just started, with Hamilton building the country's first units.
They would be rented by pensioners or invalid beneficiaries and placed on relatives' sections, and would have bedroom, lounge and kitchen-dinette; the bathroom would include a 'shub'; a shower with built-in seat and tub. The unit would be in separable halves.
The units would be owned by the council, and financing of $17 000 came from the Housing Corporation. The units would be rented to the occupants, and the relatives would be responsible for installation, maintenance and removal.
Reprinted on September 29, 1981;the first three units were nearing completion in Masterton.
The first unit was pictured in the November 17 'Leader' it had been placed in Shakespeare Avenue. the step layout was different, and there was no canopy. Neither version showed the handrails which would now be normal.Date TakenJune 1981Geotagnot specified
