Not a practical vehicle; imagine trying to crank without affecting the steering, for a start. A conventional 'penny-farthing' was pedalled directly, and its main wheel would be up to 1.3 metres in diameter; one revolution would travel 4 metres, compared to a modern bike with 70-cm wheels travelling around 6.6 metres in a 3:1 middle gear; so the penny-farthing was quite low-geared; chain drives were invented for them.
