By: UHCL Admin9th Jul 2019 9:48AMIn 1853 Brown and Downey each claimed the land (Section 119). The section was split in two and Crown Grant 858 issued to James Brown (eastern part) and 875 to John Downey (western or church part). The grants also included half of section 128 each.

In 1855 Petre purchased the 50 acre western part of section 119 from Downey.

In 1864 the Hon Mr Petre gifted land for a Catholic Chapel in the Upper Hutt. The gift is listed in the "Minutes of Evidence Third Report of the of The Religious, Charitable, and Educational Trusts Commission 1870."

In 1875 Petre gifted four acres to Bishop Redwood to be held

"In trust for the exclusive use benefit and purposes of the Nuns known as the Sisters of Mercy belonging to or connected with the Roman Catholic Church."
By: UHCL Admin2nd Jul 2019 11:07AMPeter Ata contributed that: The land occupied by St Joseph's Church was not owned by Brown. The following is from my Cruickshanks Saddle Land Ownership Research Notes – "the western section is the church land west of Pine Avenue; the eastern part is the land to the east of Pine Avenue."
