DescriptionScotland's Carron Iron Works was huge, and at times employed 2000. They are best known for their short-barreled naval cannon, known as Carronades.
This is one of two guns sometimes referred to as the 'Johnsonville guns'. A brass plaque stated 'Presented to the Corps of Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers by R. W. Bothamley Esq. 22 Sept 1960.
'This gun was used in military engagements in the Paremata locality about 1846.' A history of Trentham Camp says the guns came from Fort Britomart.
In 2010 the plaque was photographed on the base of this gun, which stood at the camp entrance; it is missing in this image.

At that time, a second gun was pictured on a cast-iron stand used for moving guns from place to place, and unsuitable for firing; its wheels were dated 1936. The Council photos show two guns on such carriages, in addition to the one shown here. One gun was made at the Royal Arsenal.Date Taken7th December 1998
