DescriptionThis gun was photographed alongside a Carron 24-pounder; it is perched on what look like railway sleepers.
A history of Trentham Camp describes it as the barrel of a 6-inch Armstrong hydro-pneumatic gun from Fort Kelburne, Ngauranga; the trunnion is marked 'Sir W G Armstrong & Co, 1886, No. 4975'.
At one stage in its history, it had suffered the indignity of being used as a flagpole
Such guns were used for defence against naval attack, and installed with disappearing mounts
